I have always enjoyed working with my hands but I started making things from wood when i was recuperating from a prolonged bout with cancer. I found it to be vary hard to turn my mind off so I decided to keep my hands busy and for a few minutes and sometimes a few hours at a time I was busy and at peace.
This is one of the houses I have kept for my own little family of birds. It is about 8 years old and has housed several families of birds. I am not particular about the species of bird that chooses my houses but I do make the dimensions of the of the entrance holes various sizes to accommodate different size birds.
I call this one my bird condo and have built several all a little different but similar. When you build things without written plans you can use the material you have on hand and make it fit. I believe that is what birds do in nature. I have a family of house wrens who have built a nest in my storage shed for several years in a row. I don't know if it is the same birds but they use the same place to raise their family each year. They enter the shed through a hole in the door that was meant for a bolt lock and use the same can of nails to build their nest in each year. It is an old metal Folgers coffee can with an assortment of loose nails and they rebuild the same nest if is disturbed or build a new one if it is moved. I sometimes wonder if they would pick that same home place if I put a Maxwell House can there.
